Alleyway Gets Some Attention From Caring Neighbors
The alleyway between 63rd and 64th at Foster Rd. used to be home to a beautiful mural. Unfortunately it became the target of repeated grafitti and it was painted over. With hopes of reducing or eliminating the neglect of this location, a group of friends from the neighborhood has decided to undertake an improvement project. The group also hopes to remove invasive species and encourage increased stewardship of the under-used common land. If you’d like more information on how you can get involved and support their efforts, contact the Mt. Scott-Arleta Neighborhood Association at msananews@gmail.com.
The building to the left when you face the alley is owned by Mr Katz. He is an artist of note here in Portland and installed the lighting that lite this original mural up. He also maintained the mural until it's unfortunate mass tagging.
ReplyDeleteThere was a plaque on it that read "created in 1998 (?) (I'm going from memory here) by SE uplift and some school. (It is probably still there. It is located at the very right, upper area at the end of the alley on the building on the right. I contacted SE uplift when this was first damaged.
This mural was entitled "Foster road in the 1920's" and had the paintings of buildings on Foster road with people in 1920's dress. The buildings had the old business names on them too.
He would be the one to approach to get this painted again, I would think.
Also, is there anyway to start a thread on this about issues to address? Such as a litter cleanup and such.
Are you aware of the mural that Foster/Powell NA is working on? Here is the link. Looks like the mural will be on the old Phoenix drugstore on the corner of 67th and Foster.
